Abstract:
Cars development trend is besides development in functional performances, safety systems and physical outlook, tremendously changing also the dashboard functional characteristics. The most significant change is in switching from mechanical control elements into the virtual controls via touch screen control panels. As a consequence, driver is forced to use both touch and visual contact to locate and adjust the right switch on it, or even search the broad menu of the control system. Measured search time turned to be on average between 2 – 4 sec (FR radio control, A/C control,
scrolling the menu for information, etc.). The problem raised with this is not searching, but it is going for a time period when a driver doesn’t put an attention on the road. Driving with speed above 120 km/h means that car is driving without control for over than 100 m, as well as driver doesn’t put any attention on the traffic around. Thus, the paper will in detail present measurements related to the control of the dashboard and the consequences on the driving abbilities.
