Abstract:
This study presents application of micro scratch tester in characterisation of nanocomposites based on ZA-27 alloy. Nanocomposites were developed using compocasting procedure with different volume fraction (1, 3 and 5%) of Al2O3 nanoparticles with average size 20-30 nm. Compocasting procedure is one of the most cost effective procedures, due to absence of expenses that regards on the previous preparation of nanoparticles. Taking into account general problems related to the nanokomposite materials reinforced with nanoparticles, such as porosity, presence of agglomeration and uneven distribution of nanoparticles in a matrix alloy, scratch test appeared reliable for mechanical and tribological characterisation of developed nanocomposites. Scratch test results provides information related on frictional and wear properties, while mechanical properties could be obtained from penetration and residual depth values. Obtained results related to the developed nanocomposites were compared to the matrix alloy results and also indicate on presence of aforementioned structural irregularities which have detrimental effect on mechanical and tribological properties of nanocomposites.
