Abstract:
Composites with reinforcing textile structures are called textile composites. Textile composites are being widely used in advanced structures in many industrial applications because they possess outstanding physical, thermal and favorable mechanical properties, particularly light weight, high stiffness and strength, good fatigue resistance, excellent corrosion resistance and dimensional stability. Since the composite material properties are anisotropic and inhomogeneous in nature, parameters that are controlling mechanical properties depends on the textile reinforcement. The well known complex textile structures used as reinforcements for advanced composites are woven, knitted, braided and nonwoven fabrics. In this paper three different types of glass woven textile structure as reinforcement for composite materials are discussed. The breaking strength was experimentally determined using standard method. Characterization of the structure of textile materials with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also made. Generally speaking, mechanical properties of woven fabrics are governed by weave parameters: weave architecture, yarn size, fabric density, fiber orientation angle and fiber volume fraction.
