Abstract:
The eco-friendliness of a fabricated product like tyres includes the environmental effects of the manufacturing process, the environmental impact of tyres during its utilization, and the influence on the environment at the end of its useful exploitation. Thus industry must first look at the three substantial requirements: compound formulations, adequate rolling resistance and elastomeric materials recycling. Silica and carbon black are reinforcing fillers that are used for tyres. Because of their different surface characteristics, both fillers can form agglomerates. Aggregation of filler particles causes imbalances between the movements of network precursors and fillers. Adequate dispersion of nano particles effects the minimization of energy losses. Silica has a high polarity and a hydrophilic surface due to silanol groups and is incompatible with non-polar network precursors (natural rubber, butadiene rubber, styrene–butadiene rubber). The utilization of silica with non-polar rubbers without any compatibilizers effects poor dispersion and inferior properties. Polar functional groups on the silica surface may form hydrogen bonds with other compound polar components. Thus, commonly basic accelerators can be adsorbed on the silica acidic surface which negatively affects cross-linking behavior. The goal of our work was to study silica reinforced elastomers based on copolymer of butadiene and styrene as network precursor.
