Abstract:
Background: scaling and root planing, as non-surgical therapy consists of supra and subgingival tooth debridement. However, sometimes this therapy does not bring satisfying results; therefore local subgingival application of other chemotherapeutic agents may be used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.
Aim: aim of this paper is to investigate efficiency of hyaluronic acid as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in chronic periodontitis patients.
Material and method: there were 36 chronic periodontitis patients in the randomized split mouth design research. FMPS and FMBS were measured before the treatment, as well as 1 and 4 weeks after. We also measured periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) before and 3 months after the treatment. The patients received full mouth SRP. Hyaluronic acid based biogel was applied to the test side first day after SRP was available.
Results: All investigated parameters show statistically significant changes.
Conclusion: subgingival application of hyaluronic acid has a beneficial effect on investigated parameters and appears to be a suitable candidate as an adjunct to SRP in chronic periodontitis patients.
