Abstract:
Conservation and restoration of architectural heritage include one of the most complex areas of application of materials science in the building development. In addition to the possession of significant information on the construction process, properties of the structural framework and methods that were used in the original construction, as well as the facts about the historical development of a building, it is required to have the expert knowledge about the technologies and materials that can today be used for reconstruction, without compromising the integrity and inherited architecture of the old building.
This paper deals with recent findings of the capacity of nanomaterials and methods of application of nanotechnology, which can be used to easily solve problems in the protection and restoration of historical layers of the architecture. Nanomaterials, such micellar solutions, dispersions of alkaline nanoparticles and chemical gels, and the microemulsions can be used for advanced confrontation to degradation of old materials, without changing their physical-chemical properties while reducing or avoiding the occurrence of defects, which is not the case with traditional materials and methods.
The paper examined the research methods of historical layers and the process of identifying the compatibility of some of the old materials with a specific nanomaterial, and the means of their practical application. Basic building materials encountered in historical buildings, such as stone, wood and brick are in this work treated as materials of primary importance.
In addition to presenting the latest knowledge and principles of upcoming trends, the scientific contribution of this work is reflected in the widening of the field of knowledge which architects conservators and restorers need to power, in order to improve not only their results, but to bring the profession and cooperation with the natural sciences experts to a higher level.
